Drugs During Pregnancy

Sometimes the medicine you take during pregnancy can enter the fetus and cause damage or even birth defects. This can be true for prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines or herbal supplements. Some drugs are known to cause birth defects and damage to the fetus, while other pose a lesser risk it always best to check with your health care provider before taking any medications.

The risk of damage being done to the fetus is the greatest in the first weeks of pregnancy. This is when the major organs are being developed. Even if a drug is not considered a risk in early stages of pregnancy, there may still be negative effects for the baby later. To be sure it is best to avoid all medicines if possible.

Some drugs are not safe to take during pregnancy, even if they were prescribed for you before you became pregnant. Always be sure your health care provider knows you are pregnant. Keep in mind that other things like herbal teas, caffeine, vitamins, tobacco, and alcohol can affect the growing fetus.

Drugs taken during pregnancy reach the fetus primarily by crossing the placenta. This same route is taken by oxygen and nutrients going to the fetus. The drugs that a pregnant woman takes can affect the fetus in several ways.

*Directly, causing damage, abnormal development leading to birth defects or death.

*Altering the function of the placenta, usually by causing blood vessels to narrow (constrict) and reduce the supply of oxygen and nutrients. This can cause an underweight and underdeveloped baby.

*Forceful contractions of the muscles of the uterus. This can cause indirect injury to the fetus by reducing blood supply or triggering pre-term labor and delivery.

These drugs have been linked to birth defects.

Accutane (an anti-acne drug)

Lithium (an anti-depressant)

Tegison (used to treat psoriasis)

Coumadin (an anti-coagulant)

Chloramphenicol, Nitrofurantoin and Tetracycline (antibiotics)

The FDA has a system to rate drugs in terms of their safety, but many drugs have not been studied in pregnant women to see if they cause damage to the growing fetus. Of course, the safest system is to avoid all drugs but when necessary contact your doctor.

Category A - drugs that have been tested for safety and have been found to be safe.
Category B - drugs that have been frequently used and do not appear to cause major birth defects or other problems.
Category C - drugs that are more likely to cause problems for the mother or the fetus. Many of these drugs do not have safety studies in progress or studies are not finished. These drugs often come with a warning that they should only be used when the benefits outweigh the risks.
Category D – drugs that have clear health risks for the fetus.
Category X – drugs that have been shown to cause birth defects and should never be taken during pregnancy.

For more information on which drugs pose risks and dangers for pregnant women check the link below.

Questioning The Safety Of Our Food To Health

Have you ever wondered about the safety of dyes, food additives, pesticides and genetically engineered foods? Are these foods really safe or do they actually cause debilitating diseases? Most of us would choose to believe that the FDA and the EPA are guarding and protecting our food supply, but beware; they have ties with the chemical industry.

In the old days, foods were colored with natural substances from plants and vegetable based compounds, but after WWII, the chemical industry started development of petroleum-based ingredients. There benefits were seen to lower costs and extend shelf life but not necessarily to benefit the public.
Chemicals added to foods are tested on laboratory animals and have been deemed safe for humans in small doses. The problem with that is the accumulative effects they have overtime. Our bodies have remarkable abilities to rid us of toxins but when we are balm barded day after day the outcome is disease.

Foods that contain carcinogens (cancer causing agents) are actively in our food and water. Again they appear in small amounts but accumulate over time. The way these chemicals cause cancer is through “irritation” at the cellular and DNA level. When we are under stress or in a weakened state these carcinogens can alter the structure of the cell and abnormal duplication occurs. Other than cancer there are many diseases now being associated with the food we eat. Free radicals in our food have similar effects as radiation does. They do damage to skin tissue and the gastrointestinal tract. Other problems include inflammatory diseases, allergies and cardiovascular diseases. In his new book, In Defense Of Food: An Eater’s Guide, Michael Pollan says, “The chronic diseases that now kill most of us can be traced directly to the industrialization of our food.”

Cloned food or genetically engineered foods pose known and unknown dangers. These foods are being developed for pesticide tolerance. Which means they can use more pesticides without hurting the plant. The problem with that is that the pesticides soak into the food and cannot be washed away. The FDA has cleared cloned meat and milk as being “no health risk to the public”. Of course the FDA has ties to the meat lobbyists.

We also have growth hormones and antibiotics in our meat and milk. These are either injected into the animals or delivered through their feed. Why do we need extra growth hormones or antibiotics? By the way, have you ever noticed how young girls seem to go into puberty earlier and earlier?

Of course not everybody is onboard with genetically engineered foods. The Catholic Healthcare West Hospital has taken a stance against these foods. They decided to seek alternatives to cloned animals and genetically engineered ingredients. They stated they took this position, “in recognition of the serious health, environmental and ethical concerns raised by these untested technologies”.

Should we question the safety of our food? I think the answer to that is pretty clear. What can be done about it?
The only way to minimize your risk is to eat unprocessed, fresh foods; which are organically grown. Read labels and be aware of what you’re eating. Maybe this means cooking more like Grandma did, and question everything.

Patents and the Price of Medical Drugs

The patent protection for pharmaceutical drugs has increased substantially in recent years. What that means for consumers is higher prices for an extended period.

Risk Of Infringement

Drug patents were initially put into place to offset drug manufacturers costs and recoup their investments for research, clinical testing, packaging and marketing. By patenting a drug a company is guaranteed they will have no completion for their drug by other companies offering a generic of that drug until the patent expires.

In the 1980’s the length of patents were 15 years. Compare that to today’s length of 25 years, with varying periods regularly granted to pharmaceutical companies for further patents for things like new uses, changes in dosages and color or markings; and you have quite an extended monopoly.

Drug companies know that when their patent is over and generics of their product is allowed on the market, their prices must also come down, so they will do everything within their power to extend their patents. The expiration of a patent removes the monopoly of the patent holder, however, a new drug with significant changes to the compound could be patented.

On the other hand, a generic drug is produced and distributed without patent protection. A generic drug may still have a patent on the formulation but not its active ingredients. Generic drugs must contain the same active ingredients as the original to avoid more clinical trials. According to the FDA, generics are identical or within an acceptable bio equivalent range of the original name brand. When generic products become available, prices are substantially reduced for both the original name brand product as well as the generic because of the competition factor.

Patent lifetimes differ from country to country. According to Elaine Feuer, the author of “Innocent Casualties”, “Because the U.S. is the only major industrialized nation that does not regulate prices or profits of drug companies, prescription drugs generally cost 25% to 40% more than other countries.” In other words, drug companies rely on American sales to boost their profits while the same products are sold worldwide at cheaper prices. In fact, for many drugs, more than half of the revenue is from the United States alone.

Researching Only Profitable Substances

Even though an herb may treat or sometimes cure a disease, drug companies may not desire to research and market it. This is because, herbs, by their very nature cannot be patented. Since the profitability of herbs, vitamins and minerals does not exist, the public may remain largely ignorant of their benefits.

Although companies cannot patent natural plants in their whole form, they can patent the individual ingredients of plants. This is a laborious process since the plants components must be broken down and active ingredients must be isolated. At that point a drug company can say, they have “discovered” a new ingredient.

This system, although it would be profitable for the drug companies, has a downside. Many times an active ingredient does not work as well as the entire plant would have. Take the case of St. John’s Wart; the entire plant kills the AIDS virus in the test tube, while hypericum, the isolated ingredient does not.

As author Gary Null, of “AIDS: A Second Opinion” writes, “One report published in Fact Magazine speculates that the principle reason vitamin C is not commonly prescribed is that it is not as profitable as those syrups and pills your doctor dispenses.”

Patients and Bio Piracy

In 1993, the University of Mississippi Medical Center had a patent issued to them by the United States Patent Office on the use of turmeric for healing. Turmeric had been used for centuries in India as part of the traditional practices of Ayurvedic medicine. The overseas patenting of turmeric and products of the neem tree caused controversy in India as well as other nations. After it was proven that records had existed for the use of turmeric for centuries, the U.S. Patient and Trademark Office canceled its patient. This makes wonder just how far the drug companies will go to turn a profit.

How To Care For Plant Diseases Naturally

All plants get diseases. Organic farming methods combine the scientific knowledge of ecology, natural pesticides and practices to control these diseases. Concern about applying chemicals and pesticides on plants have sparked a new surge of organic farming methods. It’s cheap and easy to use these methods and good for the environment.

Fungi cause most garden diseases. There are more than 8,000 species of fungal pathogens that inhabit the above ground portion of the plant or are within the soil. Most any fungicide acts as a barrier between the pathogenic agents and the plant tissues and must be applied before new leaves or other susceptible pant parts appear. You can apply fungicides when the first sign of disease appears or when the weather conditions are favorable.
Most diseases infect plants through wounds caused by insects. Some of the best ways to prevent diseases infections is to use products that contain botanicals that kill insects as well as add minerals to prevent diseases. The best method for fighting disease is in preventing it in the first place.

Prevention methods:

* Avoid wet soggy soils, since they favor many root diseases.
* Rotate the crop, to deter the build up of plant specific diseases.
* Use only disease free seeds and transplants
* Maintain good soil tiling and fertility. Maintain a soil ph of 6.5 to 7.0. Lower levels of ph are more acid and disease of pathogens is favored in acidic soils.
* Don’t overcrowd plants. Thinning them out promotes air circulation and prevents humidity.
* Destroy or discard diseased plants or plant parts.
*Keep your garden free of debris that might harbor pathogens and snip off diseased spots as soon as they are noticed. Carry a small bag with you when inspecting your garden to get rid of infected plants of pests
Generally speaking, if you plant your garden in well-drained soils and amend the soil annually with good quality compost, there will be a high population for beneficial bacteria in that soil. You can also purchase inoculated seeds or inoculate seed yourself. This prevents many pathogenic diseases.
Herbal oil sprays may also be effective against fungal pathogens. Essential oils such as made from basil, fenugreek, cumin, mint, clove and eucalyptus have been known to show success against fungal pathogens.

Soaps have been used for many years in organic farming. A few drops of dish detergent used in a spray bottle with water will protect against some insects. As with any treatment, it is important to test a small area of the plant first.
Oil sprays protect against fungi probably because it helps dispel the water that fungal diseases need to grow. Some oils like petroleum based can build up in your soil with repeated use.
Vegetable oils are biodegradable and should not cause any long-term problem for you garden. Salad and cooking oil are less disruptive to the environment and are readily available.
Baking soda is another not toxic substance that helps control pests and diseases. Mix together 1 ½ tablespoon baking soda,

1-tablespoon vegetable oil,

1-tablespoon dish detergent,

2-gallon water jug

Shake up and spray on plants. Be careful of flowers or blooms, and start with a test area.
Silica and Silicate salts have long used as sprays for organic gardens. These contain the extract of the common plant horsetail and protect against fungal diseases. Be cautioned that when using a silicate salts; they are strong alkaline substances.
Compost tea is a water extract of fermented compost. These teas are full of antibiotics microbial products and are beneficial microbes that compete with pathogens for nutrients. Compost tea can be used as a foliar spray or used undiluted tea on soil and roots. One type of commercial product that makes use of “friendly” microorganisms to fight diseases is Galltrol-A. There are many controls you can apply to fight diseases naturally, but it is advisable not to limit yourself to a single approach. Trying an approach as simple as a row of marigolds in with your vegetables is one such control. The trick is to experiment with what works best for your plants and test small areas first.

How Eneergy Healing Affects Your Health

Energy medicine is used for holistic healing therapies. The practice of energy medicine dates back to at least 5,000 years. Energy healing focuses on the manipulation of the “life force”, to bring about balance and wellness.

Energy is all around us, of course this is no secret, but even a rock can store it. Everyday we are bombarded with energy from many sources. These are energies from many different sources such as; Infra Red waves, x- rays, radiation and radio waves to name a few. Our bodies are receiving stations for this energy and transmitters of energy too. We all have storage centers in our bodies that store energy and energy patterns. We can have stored energy from something that happened yesterday as well as many years ago. Some of these energy patterns can be happy memories as well as painful or sad memories. We store these memories throughout our lives.
Negative forms of energy can cause unbalances and block the free flow of energy. This leads to disease. Quantum Touch, another form of energy healing, is based on an individual’s ability to heal. As with many energy healing modalities, Quantum Touch, works on the concept that the body knows how to bring itself back to ultimate health. Deepak Chopra wrote, “In order for consciousness to affect matter, it must affect it at the quantum of subatomic level.” Einstein showed us that E=MC, which tells us that mass and energy are interchangeable. This means that both time and space are not absolute. That being said, then mass is nothing more than a form of energy. So if energy can exist as a solid matter or as a non-solid matter and can also change its form, then energy healing can be a way of balancing that energy.

There are many modalities for energy based therapy techniques. Some techniques involve practitioners using hands on while other involves non-touch treatments. Reike is an ancient laying on the hands healing technique
That uses the life force to heal imbalances within.

Energy healing can teach ways to balance you energy. Sometimes it involves the release of negative forms of energy or redirection positive energy. Ayerveda, (the traditional medical system of India) and traditional Chinese Medicine both view health as the free flow of energy. Opening up your energy channels can realign structures, balance organs and glands, reduce muscle pain, heal burns, accelerate healing from injuries and much more. Although Energy Healing is easy enough for a child to learn it is powerful enough to astound physicians, chiropractors and physical therapists. One main thing to remember with energy healing is that everyone has the innate ability to heal himself or herself. Energy healing teaches us to focus, amplify and direct that energy to heal.
